LHJ Basic Needs Programme
LHJ’s Basic Needs Programme (BNP) was instituted in 2020 to address the economic crises that poor families were facing due to the advent of COVID-19. Families whose head of household was unemployed and who had no economic grounding, were further impacted by the Pandemic. They felt their safety nets (family members who would usually assist and had now lost their jobs) falling out from under them.
In response to appeals for help, Living Hope Jamaica implemented a programme which supplies care packages and medical assistance to these families once every other month. This intervention is not expected to be a permanent fix but to assist until the families can find their footing again.
Families are selected based on their levels of need. After the request or recommendation is received, a social worker is sent to visit with the families to do a needs assessment for each. It is on the recommendation of the Social Worker that a family is placed on the list of recipients for our care package intervention.
